Lackawanna State Park has an interesting history.  It opened as a state park on June 10, 1972. The park was first built in 1912 by the D.L & W. Railroad which was going to use it to build their own reservoir since they were in a dispute with the Scranton Gas and Water Company whom they felt were over charging them for water. They never built the reservoir because the water company lowered their charges for water to the railroad. The railroad rented the land to local farmers up until 1946 when they sold it to Robert Moffat, a local Scranton coal operator. In 1968, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the land and developed it into what it is today for the residents and visitors of Lackawanna County. When you visit the park, you will find many activities that include:

  • Camping - both modern and rustic camp spots are available. You can sleep in a tent, or bring along your pop up camper.
  • Swimming - the park offers a 160 ft diameter pool for those looking to cool themselves down with a nice swim.
  • Hunting - the park offers over 500 acres open to hunting, trapping.
  • Hiking - you will find over 5 miles of great hiking.
  • Horseback Riding - the Abington Trail is a 3.5 mile multi-use trail.
  • Mountain Biking - you can mountain bike on the Abington Trail.
  • Picknicking - you will find many grills in the picknicking area of the park. The park also offers a pavillion which may be reserved in advance for a fee. On days when the pavillion is not rented, it is available on a first come first serve basis.
  • Fishing - the park boasts a 198 acre lake named "Lake Lackawanna" that is stocked yearly. Some of the common fish in the lake include trout, muskellunge, walleye, channel catfish, bullhead, pickerel and largemouth bass. Boats are allowed on the lake but you can only use electric motors.
  • Boating - you can go canoeing, rowboating and even sailboating.
